Overview

The Mental Capacity (Amendment) Bill sets out that the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) will be replaced by Liberty Protection Safeguards. This legislation will seek to streamline the assessment process and extend the provision of Liberty Protection Safeguards to any health and social care setting, giving an increased role to the NHS and care homes in arranging their own assessments and authorising Liberty Protection Safeguards.

Workshop: Towards a Liberty Protection Safeguards Handling Toolkit (Flexible Afternoon Break)

In this extended workshop session, you will work through different scenarios that are applicable to the setting that you work in. These will help you understand what the new process of Liberty Protection Safeguards will be and the action you need to take to safeguard vulnerable individuals.

You will work through the following issues and scenarios:

Take a practical approach to working within the Liberty Protection Safeguards
Consider the human rights of the individual and how best to promote them in the new system
Examine the ethical and legal issues
Working through difficult issues
Develop a practical approach to recognising and minimising deprivation of liberty
Identify challenges and grey areas to implementing the changes
Be better prepared for future implementation of the Liberty Protection Safeguards
