The number of Teaching Assistants has expanded by over 150,000 in the past 15 years, more than doubling the presence in schools of key support staff. Professional guidance and standards have begun to be adopted, and evidence for the effective use of TAs is now established.

The use of TAs is under increasing scrutiny. To achieve a positive inspection rating schools must be able to evidence the effective use of their TAs and the impact on pupil outcomes. With £4 billion being spent annually on TAs through funding such as the Pupil Premium, it is vital that TAs are equipped with the skills to support teachers and raise the attainment of all pupils across the classroom.
