Duncan Gillespie

With nearly 20 years of experience, Duncan is an established solicitor specialising in all aspects of EU law competition and regulatory law.

Mr Gillespie was a Partner in a major international law firm in the City of London for nearly 10 years, where he specialised in EU and competition law.  He now practices as an independent legal consultant specialising in all aspects of commercial law, including technology and engineering contracts, competition law, data protection and regulatory law.

A primary focus of Duncan’s work is State aid law, where he advises public sector bodies, private companies under investigation for allegedly receiving unlawful aid and companies complaining about unlawful state aid to their competitors.  He has also brought a number of State aid cases before the European Courts.

Duncan has obtained EU State aid clearance in a number of large scale cases, including for a publicly funded deployment of broadband networks in the UK and the UK Film Council’s Digital Screen Network project. Duncan works extensively with central Government Departments and local authorities in relation to the application of State aid law to regeneration projects and also with universities and research institutions on the application of State aid law to collaborative research projects.

With a degree in Mining and Petroleum Engineering Duncan has a particular interest in the application of competition law to the energy and technology sectors and has significant experience advising clients on the application of EU Regulatory law in those sectors.

Duncan regularly comments in the media on competition law matters and is in the process of qualifying as a solicitor in Hong Kong.
